“Fonda Don Chon” establishes what it means to feel at home

The first Fonda Don Chon—established in 2009—sits along 618 Shoppers Lane in Covina, California. The wrought iron fencing creates a boundary between the restaurant’s terrace and the city limits. As soon as people cross the threshold from the iron fencing into the patio, they experience murals painted on the walls depicting exposed brick, potted flowers, and a painted scroll over the double doors with the restaurant’s name proudly displayed.

The diverse group of people who enter through the carved, wooden double doors exemplifies the way in which food has no single target. The chef, Asuncion “Chon” Hernandez, specializes in creating Jalisco-style entrees for people of all ages to enjoy. Through family recipes passed down from his mom in Jalisco, Mexico, the chef and the owner, Jimmy Roman, have created an environment that transports customers for hours at a time through taste, touch, sound, and smell.

The morning rush can often be enjoyed over a steaming cup of café de olla while customers order plates of “Chon’s Chilaquiles,” “Huevos Divorciados,” or even a classic breakfast burrito filled with your choice of ham, chorizo, steak or machaca. The breakfast plates seamlessly blend in with the daily buffet. Served Monday through Sunday from 9AM-3PM, the daily buffet often serves piping-hot bowls of cocido, albondigas, and on the weekends, menudo, along with your class dishes of rice, beans, and cheesy enchiladas. It is no wonder why people cannot stop running to Fonda Don Chon to experience the chef’s twists on his mother’s recipe, and the outstanding customer service provided by Jimmy and his staff that allows their customers to gather around the table and feel like they are home.
