Our History
The Handel’s Story

On a hot summer day in July, 1945, Alice Handel began serving ice cream out of her husband’s gas station in Youngstown, Ohio. Her first batches were made using old fashioned recipes with fresh fruit she picked from her own backyard. Since then, Handel’s has grown to include locations in California, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The menu has expanded to include over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream and yogurt. Handel’s success has been documented in many national publications including USA Today, People Magazine, Chocolatier Magazine, and US News and World Report. Recently published books The 10 Best of Everything and Everyone Loves Ice Cream both recognize Handel’s as one of the best ice creams in the world.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt is made fresh daily, one batch at a time, at each location, using products, equipment, methods and recipes exclusive only to Handel’s. WE NEVER SKIMP! Fistfuls of nuts, creamy caramel, deep dark chocolate, fresh fruits, and fluffy marshmallows are blended into each batch as it is drawn from specially designed machines. It is this T.L.C. that has helped Handel’s continue its long tradition of excellence. We want to thank our customers, who have helped us grow our reputation from coast to coast and from generation to generation.
